State Rep. Monica Robb Blasdel (R-Columbiana County) is celebrating National Children’s Book Week by touring the district’s elementary schools to read to students across the region. The designated week runs from Nov. 6-12.

“It’s been my pleasure to travel across the district to visit our elementary schools promoting reading, especially focused on early childhood literacy,” Robb Blasdel said. “This is an issue I intend to continue to promote at the Statehouse as the effects of positive literacy in our youth transcends into further educational successes.”

Robb Blasdel notes as a member of the House Finance Committee she was a part of important discussions when it comes to pushing for early childhood initiatives within the state budget. Specifically, the budget included $16 million to fund the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which mails kids one free book each month until they reach the age of 5.

The budget also included funding for literacy improvement for high-quality literacy teaching materials, a program to pay bonuses to teachers that complete additional professional training on teaching reading and funding the hiring of literacy coaches.

The representative visited schools in the following districts across Columbiana County and Carroll County to read to their students for National Children’s Book Week:

  • Conotton Valley Union Local School District
  • Brown Local School District
  • Crestview Local School District
  • Beaver Local School District
  • East Palestine City School District
  • Leetonia Exempted Village School District
