Reps. Blasdel, Peterson's Carbon Capture Regulation Bill Heads to the Governor's Desk

COLUMBUS – State Representatives Monica Robb Blasdel (R-New Waterford) and Bob Peterson (R-Sabina) today announced that the Ohio House concurred with Senate amendments to House Bill 170, legislation that would give Ohio authority over the regulation of Class VI injection wells used for carbon capture and storage. 

House Bill 170 gives Ohio authority over Class VI injection wells, which are used to store carbon dioxide (CO2) deep underground. Carbon capture and storage technology works by collecting carbon emissions from industrial facilities and safely storing them in underground rock formations.

“Today’s vote brings us one step closer to putting a clear framework in place that keeps decision-making here at home, ensures these projects are developed responsibly, and delivers meaningful benefits to Ohio communities,” said Rep. Blasdel. 

Currently, companies must obtain permits from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a process that can take several years. This legislation allows Ohio to manage the permitting process would create a more efficient system, encourage investment, and ensure projects are regulated by state officials who understand Ohio’s needs.

“For years, burdensome federal regulations have slowed investment and limited growth in this industry,” said Rep. Peterson. “House Bill 170 creates a more efficient path forward that strengthens Ohio’s energy future, supports responsible development, and positions our state to compete for new jobs and economic opportunities.”

House Bill 170 now advances to the Governor’s desk for a signature.
