COLUMBUS – State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today announced the passage of House Bill (HB) 530 from the House Workforce and High Education Committee. This legislation would create the Long-term Care Workforce Study Commission, aimed at developing policy recommendations to support Ohio’s direct care workers and those they care for.

Membership to the commission includes direct care workers, long-term care providers, and individuals who receive services or represent those receiving care.

“These perspectives are vital because they understand the daily realities of caregiving, the challenges caused by workforce shortages, and the support necessary to provide safe, consistent, high-quality care,” said Rep. Brewer. “By ensuring that both providers and recipients of care have official seats at the table, this commission is grounded in lived experience, not bureaucracy, and will produce recommendations that truly reflect what is happening in Ohio’s homes, facilities, and communities.”

Ohio is facing a direct care worker shortage, and, with an aging population, this need will only grow. If established, this commission will identify best practices for the recruitment and retention of skilled employees, making sure that all Ohioans are receiving the comprehensive care they deserve.

HB 530 passed out of committee on Monday with a unanimous vote. The bill now awaits a vote on the House floor.
