Rep. Brewer Encourages Participation in "Fathers Walk" Celebrations

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today urged statewide participation in “Fathers Walk Week,” during the third week of September. Many communities in Ohio already celebrate this fatherhood initiative. In Cuyahoga County and beyond, school districts have taken the lead in hosting Fathers Walk events, inviting fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, and other role models to walk or transport students to school. 

“‘Fathers Walk Week’ is more than just symbolic. When father figures actively participate in a child’s school life, learning becomes deeper, and confidence increases. Research shows that a father’s presence and involvement in their children’s lives is directly linked to better educational outcomes, including higher academic achievement, improved attendance, and fewer behavioral challenges at school,” said Rep. Brewer. “I encourage schools across Ohio to host a Fathers Walk event and call on all role models to join their children in this celebration.”

A Fathers Walk event can look different at each location, but many school districts celebrate “Fathers Walk Week” by welcoming participants to the school, providing breakfast, and sharing informational resources for fathers and families. These events are meant to be a joyous and supportive celebration of a father’s involvement in their child’s education.  

Rep. Brewer has introduced House Bill 496, legislation to officially designate the third week of September as “Fathers Walk Week” in Ohio. The bill now awaits a third hearing in the House Children and Human Services Committee.
