COLUMBUS — State Rep. Darnell Brewer (D-Cleveland) today called for immediate statewide action to combat the ongoing epidemic of gun violence, following a series of tragic shootings across Ohio.

This weekend alone, a 6-year-old child was shot in Warren, Ohio, a shopper was killed during a shooting at the Giant Eagle in Maple Heights, and gunfire erupted at the Cuyahoga County Fair.

According to the Gun Violence Memorial, there have been over 15 deaths in Ohio in recent weeks linked to gun violence.

“These are not isolated incidents—they are part of a devastating and preventable pattern,” said Rep. Brewer. “A conversation must take place, solutions must be put forward, and our leaders must act. We know from other states and cities that violence can be reduced—and in some cases, eliminated—when evidence-based strategies and community investments are implemented.”

As announced during a recent gun violence press conference, Rep. Brewer will initiate the P.L.A.N. (Prevent, Listen, Act, Navigate) Town Hall & Resource Fair series to unite lawmakers, community leaders, and residents in addressing solutions directly. The town hall will concentrate on understanding the scope of the problem and on outlining clear action steps for Ohioans to advocate for bills, policies, and initiatives that can save lives.

The first event will take place:

Tuesday, August 19, 2025
9:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Hilltop Library, Columbus, Ohio

The Columbus kickoff will include several state representatives and senators from the Columbus area, along with local officials and community advocates. Rep. Brewer will also be joined by Cuyahoga County Councilman Michael Houser and Myesha Watkins, the newly appointed administrator of Cuyahoga County’s Office of Violence Prevention.

“We cannot allow gun violence to become an accepted reality in our communities,” added Rep. Brewer. “Ohioans deserve to feel safe—whether they are shopping, attending a fair, or simply playing outside. The time for action is now.”

Additional P.L.A.N. Town Halls are planned for Toledo, Youngstown, and Cleveland in the upcoming months.
