Rep. Brewer Calls for Action Following the Shooting of a 13-Year-old at Stafford Park

Darnell T. Brewer News

COLUMBUS - State Rep. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today calls for well overdue legislative action and support from Governor DeWine to end the gun violence public health crisis within our communities.

“Today, I join Mayor Blackwell and the entire Maple Heights community in mourning the loss of life during the incident at Stafford Park, including a 13-year-old caught in the crossfire. I offer comfort to the churches, families, children, and community leaders who were present for this tragic event. I grieve with the families and surrounding communities. Although this was not a random act, this incident again shows the vital importance of this General Assembly to act with confidence in enacting and passing fundamental commonsense gun reform we know a majority of Ohioans desire.

Again, I am asking Governor Dewine to convene and establish a commission to address the gun violence crisis in Ohio. Additionally, I am again calling on the 135th General Assembly to look at the need for red flag laws, extreme protection laws, and other commonsense measures. I am not saying we’re looking to take firearms away from legally responsible gun owners. We’re simply pushing for reforms we know our communities across Ohio want because they know it will keep our children safe. As many across the aisle will say, ‘Guns don't kill people. People do.’ Therefore, again, I am asking my colleagues to engage in conversation to find a solution.

Lastly, my office is looking at ways to name gun violence as a public health crisis in Ohio. Far too many times, we are offering prayers and comfort, but our words must reflect our actions. As you have heard me say many times and echo the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, ‘In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.’

Therefore, please join me in offering prayers to the families, friends, churches, and communities affected by yesterday's action in District 18, Maple Heights,” said Rep. Brewer.
