Maple Heights Celebrates a Milestone: Zero Infant Deaths in 2021

January 12, 2024
Darnell T. Brewer News

COLUMBUS - State Rep. Brewer (D-Cleveland) today announced that the Director of Community Health Initiatives, Marie Jones, reported that there were zero infant deaths in the City of Maple Heights in 2021. Data was provided by the Neighborhood Leadership Institute.

"Infant mortality is an issue across this nation and is, unfortunately, a larger issue in our state of Ohio. Despite the challenges, we are making strides,” said Rep. Brewer. “Under the leadership of Mayor Blackwell, in 2021, Maple Heights had zero infant deaths. I look forward to working with Mayor Blackwell to continue these achievements."

This zero-death data number reflects upon the collaborative work between Mayor Blackwell, the City’s Department of Human Services, MHPD, and MHFD; all of whom participated in a NLI led workshop for the city’s first responders.

Ohio has some of the worst infant and maternal health outcomes in the nation and Black women in Ohio are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. Rep. Brewer, the Ohio Black Maternal Health Caucus, and the Ohio House Democrats are committed to making Ohio a place where women and families feel supported and to ensure that every child in Ohio, regardless of their location, has the opportunity to thrive.
