COLUMBUS – State Rep. Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) today announced Governor DeWine has signed legislation into law that creates the Folds of Honor license plate to support scholarships for family members of veterans.

Folds of Honor is a nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships to the families of military men and women who have fallen or been disabled while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Qualified applicants begin as early as the age of five and may receive up to $5,000 annually for educational expenses.

Senate Bill 163 allows motorists to voluntarily purchase a specialty license plate for Folds of Honor through the Ohio Registrar’s office. The cost of each specialized plate is $35, of which $25 goes directly to Folds of Honor to provide scholarships to the spouse or child of a fallen or disabled veteran.

“The creation of a custom license plate for this honorable organization will help generate needed funding,” said Richardson. “By having their name and logo displayed on vehicles on our roads every day, Folds of Honor will have an opportunity to spread awareness and connect with potential new applicants and donors across the state.”

In the 2019-2020 academic year, Folds of Honor awarded 109 scholarships to Ohioans totaling $536,000.

Richardson originally introduced the legislation as House Bill 262, which passed the House unanimously in June 2019. Bruce Lancia, a board member of the Folds of Honor Central Ohio Chapter contributed greatly to the passage of the bill. He offered proponent testimony during committee hearings in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
