COLUMBUS, OH – State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) today announced the passage of House Bill 462, legislation that ensures students with severe allergies have access to the most up-to-date, lifesaving treatment options for anaphylaxis while at school or school-sponsored activities.

“Parents deserve peace of mind knowing their children can receive the care they need in an emergency,” said Rep. Richardson. “House Bill 462 empowers parents and schools by recognizing the newest technology in epinephrine delivery, a nasal spray option, and giving families the freedom to choose what’s best for their child.”

The General Assembly previously passed legislation allowing students to carry and self-administer epinephrine auto-injectors, commonly known as EpiPens. Since then, the FDA has approved a new intranasal epinephrine spray as an alternative treatment for severe allergic reactions. Under current Ohio law, nasal spray devices are not listed as an approved form of epinephrine that students may possess or use in schools. House Bill 462 updates the law to include this new delivery method, ensuring schools can accommodate students whose doctors prescribe the intranasal form.

“Adding nasal epinephrine devices to Ohio law is a simple but vital change,” Richardson added. “This legislation helps students, parents, and school staff by providing another safe and effective option to treat severe allergic reactions. It’s a commonsense update that can save lives.”

House Bill 462 now moves to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
