Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma), Ranking Member of the Ohio House Education Committee, today issued the following statement following the Ohio Controlling Board’s approval of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce’s request to increase appropriation authority by $6.44M in FY 2027 to expand the state’s ReadOhio literacy coaching program:

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma) today praised the Ohio Controlling Board for approving a $40M increase in appropriation authority for an essential program that helps low-income households with utility cost assistance - an important step toward improving affordability for families across Ohio.

COLUMBUS – State Reps. Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma) and Tex Fischer (R-Boardman) today praised a unanimous Ohio Supreme Court decision affirming that submetering companies function as utilities and are subject to regulation - calling the ruling a clear vindication of House Bill (HB) 265 and an important step forward in protecting utility affordability for Ohio families. The Court ruled that the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has the authority to regulate third-party companies that resell electricity to tenants, concluding that these entities operate as electric suppliers and must follow the same rules as traditional utilities.
