COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D-Parma) this week was selected as the recipient of the AMVETS Department of Ohio Legislator of the Year Award, recognizing his leadership and advocacy on behalf of Ohio’s veterans and military families.

The award is presented annually by AMVETS, one of the nation’s largest congressionally chartered veterans service organizations, to honor legislators who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to those who have served.

“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from AMVETS Ohio,” said Rep. Brennan. “As a former public educator and now as a state representative, I have always believed we have a solemn responsibility to support the men and women who defended our freedoms. Our veterans deserve access to the benefits they earned, protection from bad actors, and the full respect of a grateful state.”

Before serving in the Ohio House of Representatives, Rep. Brennan spent 30 years as a public school teacher, where he taught American history and government. Through his years in the classroom, he helped students understand the Constitution, civic responsibility, and the sacrifices made by generations of Americans in defense of democracy - lessons that continue to guide his work in public service.

In addition to his legislative efforts supporting veterans’ protections and services, Rep. Brennan has long been personally involved in honoring those who served. He has been active with Honor Flight Cleveland, helping ensure Northeast Ohio veterans have the opportunity to visit the memorials built in their honor in Washington, D.C. He also helped found Honor Bus Cleveland, which provides veterans who are unable to fly with an opportunity to be recognized and celebrated for their service.

Rep. Brennan is also a proud son of a member of American Legion Post 572 and has longstanding ties to the Parma Area Senior Veterans Organization, experiences that have shaped his deep respect for the sacrifices made by Ohio’s veterans and their families.

“Teaching American history and government for three decades gave me a deep appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy and the people who secured them,” added Rep. Brennan. “Growing up around veterans’ organizations and working alongside veterans through Honor Flight and Honor Bus has only strengthened my commitment to ensuring their service is honored not just in ceremony, but in policy.”

The Legislator of the Year Award underscores Rep. Brennan’s ongoing commitment to advancing bipartisan efforts that improve the lives of Ohio veterans and their families.

“For me, this work is personal,” concluded Rep. Brennan. “Listening to veterans in Parma, across Cuyahoga County, and throughout Ohio guides my work every day. I am grateful for this recognition and remain committed to standing up for those who stood up for us.”
