COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma) was honored over the weekend in Denver, Colorado, as the recipient of the national 2026 Friend of Aspiring Educators Award. The prestigious accolade recognizes Rep. Brennan's outstanding legislative leadership and steadfast advocacy in addressing the financial barriers faced by student teachers.

The award specifically recognizes Rep. Brennan’s introduction of the Future Educators Support Act, House Bill (HB) 523, which focuses on providing compensation for student teachers in Ohio. In advancing this legislation, Rep. Brennan engaged face-to-face with Ohio Aspiring Educators as a spring conference panelist and held one-on-one conversations with members to hear their personal experiences, ideas, and concerns regarding the profession.

“As a former public school teacher and now a proud parent of public school educators, I know firsthand the immense commitment required to enter this profession,” said Rep. Brennan. “At a time when many schools are navigating staffing shortages, it is important that we eliminate financial barriers for the next generation of teachers. I am incredibly humbled to receive the 2026 Friend of Aspiring Educators Award, and I remain deeply committed to fighting for our aspiring educators through HB 523 and other policy proposals.”

The Future Educators Support Act aims to provide sustainable compensation for student teachers, who are traditionally required to work full-time in classrooms without pay, hindering recruitment and creating unnecessary financial strain on young professionals.

“Supporting our future teachers remains one of the top educational priorities I hear about from families throughout Ohio,” concluded Rep. Brennan. “Compensating student teachers will help ensure that a career in public education remains viable and accessible to individuals from all economic backgrounds. This national award belongs to all the dedicated aspiring educators who share their stories and inspire my legislative work every day.”
