Rep. Brennan Applauds Ohio's State Parks for Winning Nation's Top Honor, Calls for Continued Protection from Fracking
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D-Parma) Monday applauded the news that Ohio’s state park system has been awarded the 2025 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management, recognizing it as the best in the country.
“Ohioans have long known how special our 76 state parks are, and this national recognition only confirms it,” said Rep. Brennan. “My family and I frequently enjoy visiting Geneva, Salt Fork, and Mohican State Parks, among others, and we see firsthand how these natural treasures bring people together, support local economies, and offer a chance to recharge in nature without ever leaving our state.”
The award, presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, honors state park systems that excel in long-range planning, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Ohio beat out other finalists, including Florida and Wyoming.
While celebrating the award, Rep. Brennan also stressed the importance of protecting state parks from harmful practices.
“Winning this award is a moment of pride for Ohio, but it must also serve as a reminder that we have a responsibility to protect these lands for future generations,” said Rep. Brennan. “I have been a vocal critic of fracking under our state parks because it threatens the very natural beauty and recreational opportunities that earned us this honor and the commitment to these goals made to Ohio’s taxpayers when the parks were created.”
Ohio’s recognition comes as the state continues to expand amenities, improve accessibility, and share its unique history through park programming. Rep. Brennan commended Ohio Department of Natural Resources staff and leadership for their stewardship and commitment.
“From Geneva’s lakefront views to Salt Fork’s trails and Mohican’s riverways, our parks are part of Ohio’s identity. This award is well-deserved—and now it’s our job to make sure they remain unspoiled,” concluded Rep. Brennan.
