COLUMBUS — State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D-Parma) today issued a statement applauding Vistra’s announcement of long-term power purchase agreements with Meta that will secure more than 2,600 megawatts of zero-carbon nuclear energy, including significant generation from Ohio’s Perry and Davis-Besse nuclear power plants.

The 20-year agreements will keep critical nuclear facilities operating, expand capacity through power uprates, protect existing jobs, create thousands of new project-related jobs, and strengthen Ohio’s position as a national energy leader - all without shifting costs onto taxpayers.

“This announcement is exactly why Ohio must continue to take a pragmatic, forward-looking approach to energy policy,” said Rep. Brennan. “Nuclear energy provides clean, reliable, 24/7 power that supports economic development, grid stability, and national security. These agreements ensure Ohio remains competitive as electricity demand continues to grow.”

Rep. Brennan noted that this investment validates work already done at the Ohio Statehouse to formally recognize nuclear energy’s role in Ohio’s clean energy future.

“During the 135th General Assembly, I was proud to sponsor House Bill 308, legislation that defined nuclear energy as clean energy under Ohio law,” continued Rep. Brennan. “That policy decision sent a clear message that Ohio values reliability, carbon-free power, and long-term private investment. Today’s announcement shows that smart, technology-neutral energy policy works.”

Under the agreements, Meta will purchase more than 2,600 megawatts of power from Ohio’s Perry and Davis-Besse nuclear plants, along with additional capacity from planned equipment upgrades that will increase output and add new generation to the PJM grid. Electricity generated at the plants will continue to flow to the grid for all users while supporting Meta’s growing operations.

“These plants are economic engines for their communities,” added Rep. Brennan. “They provide thousands of high-quality, union jobs, generate millions in local tax revenue, and deliver dependable power that Ohio families and businesses rely on every day. Keeping them online-and expanding their capacity- is a win for workers, ratepayers, and our state’s long-term energy security.”

Rep. Brennan emphasized the importance of maintaining Ohio’s balanced energy portfolio:

“If Ohio wants to attract investment, support advanced manufacturing and AI-driven industries, and keep energy affordable and reliable, nuclear must remain part of the solution,” concluded Rep. Brennan. “This announcement is strong evidence that Ohio is on the right track.”
