COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma), Ranking Member of the Ohio House Education Committee, today issued the following statement following the Ohio Controlling Board’s approval of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce’s request to increase appropriation authority by $6.44M in FY 2027 to expand the state’s ReadOhio literacy coaching program:

“Today’s approval to expand Ohio’s literacy coaching program is a positive step toward strengthening reading outcomes for students across our state.

By adding 50 additional ReadOhio literacy coaches, this investment will extend support to at least 70 more schools - many of which are working to improve early literacy and implement the Science of Reading with fidelity. Giving educators access to high-quality coaching and support is critical if we expect to see real, sustained progress in student achievement.

As this program grows, our focus must remain on results. That means ensuring these coaches are well-trained, deployed where they are needed most, and supported by clear accountability measures so we can track progress and outcomes.

Every child deserves the opportunity to read at grade level and beyond. I will continue working to ensure Ohio is making smart, effective investments that support both our students and our educators.”
