COLUMBUS – State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan (D–Parma), who represents the largest Ukrainian population in Ohio, recently participated in Ukraine Focus’s 19th mission to Ukraine, driving a donated ambulance from Prague, Czech Republic, to Lviv, Ukraine, as part of a major humanitarian effort.

The mission delivered 47 ambulances, two SUVs, two armored vehicles, one mobile morgue and additional vehicles, along with medical supplies and humanitarian aid. Ukraine Focus, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to providing needs-based, fully transparent humanitarian and medical assistance to Ukraine, ensuring that help reaches those who need it most.

Rep. Brennan represents Ohio House District 14, which includes Parma, Parma Heights and Cleveland neighborhoods with deep Ukrainian roots. Parma and Parma Heights are home to generations of Ukrainian-American families who have helped shape the identity of Northeast Ohio. Rep. Brennan has long regarded Parma as the Ukrainian capital of Ohio.

Those ties are visible throughout the community. Along State Road,  Ukrainian Village stands as a vibrant hub celebrated for its churches—including the golden domes of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral—as well as its local businesses, cultural institutions, traditional foods, and community organizations. The city’s formal recognition of Ukrainian Village reflects the longstanding importance of this community to Parma’s identity and economic development. The neighborhood’s businesses and institutions have helped sustain a vibrant Ukrainian-American presence while welcoming others to experience its culture and traditions.

“These are not distant connections for the people I represent. For many of my constituents, this war affects their parents, grandparents, children, relatives and friends.” said Rep. Brennan. “When I drove through Ukraine, I thought about those families back home in Parma and Parma Heights.. Standing with Ukraine means standing with people in our own community, recognizing the humanity of families who worry every day about their loved ones, and understanding that freedom is worth defending.”

For Rep. Brennan, the mission was about much more than delivering an ambulance. It was an opportunity to put into action the principles of freedom, democracy and public service that have defined his 30-year career as an American history teacher, his nearly two decades in local government, and his current service in the Ohio House of Representatives

Before traveling into Ukraine, Rep. Brennan reflected on the historical parallels between America’s fight for independence and Ukraine’s struggle for self-determination, citing the Declaration of Independence’s promise of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” and Abraham Lincoln’s vision of government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

“That was the moment when it really hit me,” Rep. Brennan added. “These are people defending their country, their culture, their families and their right to determine their own future. I have spent my career teaching young Americans about freedom and democracy. This mission gave me an opportunity to put those lessons into practice.  When people are suffering , and when that pain is felt by so many families right here in our own community, you have a responsibility to act.”

Ukraine Focus’s volunteer missions demonstrate how individuals can make a meaningful contribution to a humanitarian effort that extends far beyond any community.

“Alongside vehicles and medical supplies, these missions deliver hope, dignity and the assurance that the world has not forgotten the people of Ukraine,” Rep. Brennan continued. “Democracy is fragile and rare in the history of the world. We all have a responsibility to help it thrive. It is an honor to play a small part in moving the torch forward and adding oxygen to the flames of liberty, so that all humanity can live in the light of freedom rather than the darkness of oppression.”
