COLUMBUS, OH — State Representative Latyna M. Humphrey (D–Columbus) today issued the following statement in response to yesterday’s verdict in the case involving Casey Goodson Jr.:

“My heart remains with the family and loved ones of Casey Goodson Jr., who have carried unimaginable grief for far too long. Yesterday’s verdict — finding the defendant guilty of reckless homicide — brings a measure of accountability, and I recognize that for the family, that matters.

At the same time, I also recognize that many in our community are feeling frustration and disappointment that the verdict did not include a murder conviction. Both of those emotions can exist at the same time. Both deserve to be acknowledged.

I respect the role of the jury and the seriousness with which they were asked to consider the facts and evidence presented in this case. Their decision is a part of our judicial process, even as many continue to wrestle with what justice feels like in this moment.

This case has weighed heavily on our community, raising continued questions about trust, accountability, and fairness in our system. Justice is not just about outcomes — it is about whether people feel seen, heard, and protected.

As a legislator and as someone deeply rooted in this community, I remain committed to advancing policies that strengthen transparency, accountability, and fairness.

We must continue to have honest conversations, even when they are difficult. Because real healing doesn’t come from silence — it comes from truth, accountability, and a shared commitment to doing better.

I stand with this family and with our community — not just in this moment, but in the work ahead,” said Rep. Humphrey.

Rep. Humphrey stresses that Casey Goodson Jr.’s life and legacy must continue to guide the work ahead, including efforts to build systems rooted in transparency, accountability, fairness, and the protection of every Ohioan.
