COLUMBUS — State Rep. Munira Abdullahi (D-Columbus) today released the following statement in response to Ohio EPA’s consideration to allow new data centers without access to central sewerage systems to dispose of water used to cool servers directly into lakes, rivers and streams.

The proposed permit would effectively fast-track wastewater approvals for more than 200 data centers across the state without the level of review necessary to ensure public health and environmental safety.

“Allowing a broad general permit could enable large data center operators to discharge wastewater containing harmful substances, including PFAS, into Ohio’s waterways. These so-called forever chemicals are linked to serious health risks, including cancer, and pose long term threats to drinking water and surrounding communities,” said Rep. Munira. “I urge the EPA to deny the permit approval.”

Public comments on the permit can be submitted through the Ohio EPA’s website through January 16th.
