Cuyahoga County Awarded over $17.9 M to Redevelop Eight Hazardous Brownfield Sites
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Eric Synenberg (D-Beachwood) today announced that the Department of Development has awarded over $17.9 million to help support the cleanup and redevelopment of eight hazardous Brownfield sites across Cuyahoga County as part of the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program.
“I am pleased to see these dollars coming into Cuyahoga County,” said Rep. Synenberg. “Prioritizing the cleanup of these brownfield sites is vital to driving future economic development in our cities and protecting the health and well-being of our communities.”
The following projects have received funding in Cuyahoga County:
- $2,500,000 to the Ashland East Side Trail and Innovation Hub for asbestos abatement, demolition, and environmental remediation;
- $2,500,000 to the Canal Road redevelopment project for the demolition and remediation of a former thermal steam plant on Cleveland Riverfront;
- $2,499,999 to Project Scarlet to support the remediation and redevelopment of the historic Rose and Sloan Buildings in downtown Cleveland;
- $2,499, 985 for Bedford Community Hospital Campus clean up and demolition;
- $2,499,985 to East Side Trail and Innovation Hub for soil and groundwater contaminate remediation;
- $2,215,335 to the Cuyahoga Riverfront Restoration for the cleanup and partial demolition of a former flour mill and grain storage complex along the Cuyahoga River;
- $2,023,660 to Mayfield Site Preparation for asbestos abatement and the demolition of two deteriorated structures in Cleveland Heights;
- $1,191,750 to Silver Oaks Remediation Plan to complete the final closure of the abandoned Silver Oaks construction and demolition debris landfill.
Since its launch in 2021, the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program has awarded $716.9 million to 681 projects in 86 counties. Funding is used to assess and clean up industrial, commercial, and institutional brownfield sites that are abandoned, idled, or underutilized due to a known or potential release of hazardous substances or petroleum.
