COLUMBUS — State Reps. Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) and Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester) Tuesday had proponent testimony on House Bill (HB) 359, the Joshua Alert. The two lawmakers stood in support of Jonisa Cook, the mother of Joshua Al-Lateef Jr., as she shared her heartbreaking story about the night her son went missing on November 20th. The testimony emphasized how this legislation is not just critical but potentially lifesaving.

“I share my story with you not to reopen wounds, but to honor Joshua’s memory and to help prevent this tragedy from repeating itself. Joshua’s life was filled with love and light. And though he is no longer physically with us, I believe that his legacy can live on through this bill—through the lives it saves and the families it supports,” said Jonisa Cook.

Rep. Thomas expressed his admiration for Jonisa’s strength during the testimony.

“Let this bill be Joshua’s legacy. I commend Jonisa on her strength and resilience during testimony on Tuesday. She stands not only for Joshua, but for all families who could face similar situations unless something is done. I am also grateful to Chair White for swiftly moving this bill through committee, and we hope to pass it by the one-year anniversary of Joshua’s passing this November,” said Rep. Thomas.

With Jonisa Cook’s support, Reps. Thomas and Gross are working to ensure this bill helps other families with children, especially those with autism.

“The tragic loss of Joshua Al-Lateef Jr. has shown us the critical need for systems that protect vulnerable children. As a joint sponsor of the Joshua Alert Bill, I am committed to ensuring that no family ever has to endure the same heartache Jonisa Cook has faced. This bill is about creating a faster, more coordinated response when a child with autism or special needs goes missing. It’s about saving lives and providing families with the tools to prevent future tragedies,” said Rep. Gross.

The Chair has confirmed that HB 359 will be up for a vote next week.
