Rep. Bryant Bailey Introduces Legislation to Protect Ohio Families and Students from Radon Exposure

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Ashley Bryant Bailey (D-Cincinnati) today announced the introduction of two pieces of legislation for Earth Day aimed at protecting Ohio families and children from the dangers of radon exposure. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and is often an undetected environmental hazard.
The legislative package includes:
- The Healthy Homes Radon Disclosure Act, requiring radon testing during residential real estate transactions.
- The Safe Schools Radon Act, requiring radon testing and mitigation in public and chartered nonpublic schools across Ohio.
"Clean air is a basic right! Whether you're at home or in the classroom," said Rep. Bryant Bailey. "Radon is invisible, odorless, and dangerous. Yet too many Ohio families and children are exposed without even knowing it. On Earth Day, we're taking action to change that."
Under the Safe Schools Radon Act, school districts and chartered nonpublic schools would be required to test facilities for radon and mitigate levels at or above limits set by public health standards.
“Parents shouldn't have to wonder whether their child's school is safe," added Rep. Bryant Bailey. "This is about prevention, transparency, and protecting the next generation."
Ohio is located in a region with elevated radon risk, yet testing and mitigation policies remain inconsistent. These bills aim to create a clear, statewide standard to ensure safety across communities.
This legislation was inspired by the testimony of Radon professionals during the House General Government Committee earlier in this General Assembly.
Both pieces of legislation now await a bill number and committee assignment.
