Reps. Synenberg, Somani Introduce Marriage Equality Act
COLUMBUS – State Reps. Eric Synenberg (D-Beachwood) and Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today introduced the Marriage Equality Act to codify same-sex marriage and interracial marriage into Ohio’s constitution.
“Our constitution should reflect who we are today, not just who we were in the past. This is about recognizing the lived realities of thousands of Ohioans who deserve to see their rights respected not just in principle, but in practice,” said Rep. Synenberg. “It has been nearly 20 years since Ohio voters last had the chance to weigh in on this issue and it’s time we let them speak again.”
“As leaders in this state, we have to think about how our actions affect our constituents and what messages they send,” said Rep. Somani. “We have spent way too much time attacking empathy and inclusivity while the message we should be sending is that we believe all Ohioans deserve the right to marry the person they love, without fear that their marriage might someday be void under the law.”
If passed by the Ohio Legislature, the Marriage Equality Act would place a constitutional amendment on the ballot for the November 2026 General Election, giving Ohioans the power to enshrine marriage equality in our state constitution.
