COLUMBUS — State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today condemned a hearing held on January 14 by the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) on the abortion medication Mifepristone, which was cited as a “safety review.” Any medical professional with appropriate knowledge knows that the FDA has extensively researched the safety and efficacy of this medication.

“As an obstetrician-gynecologist, I know that abortion is safer than pregnancy, and that medication abortion is safer and is evidence-based care. When politics interfere with medical care, it only increases the risk of maternal and infant mortality. This is already evident in the data showing the United States’ alarming maternal health outcomes compared to other developed countries. Politicians should stay out of the exam room and let women get the care they are entitled to," said Rep. Somani.

Another political intrusion into medical spaces, this hearing went against both established science and the will of the American people. Since 2000, Mifepristone has been approved for use in the United States, and 63% of abortions in 2023 were medication abortions–a number which continues to rise. Implying that medication abortions are unsafe, and attempting to limit reproductive freedom is a matter of life and death. Conversations about reproductive rights should always be science-focused and patient-centered.  This statement was originally published in a press release for Doctors for America condemning this attack on reproductive care.
