This mysterious creature could become Ohio's official cryptid

What's 4-feet tall, frog-like and could soon be commemorated by the state of Ohio?

It's the Loveland Frogman, of course.

Reps. Jean Schmidt, R-Loveland, and Tristan Rader, D-Lakewood, introduced legislation to make the Frogman − also known as the Loveland Frog − the official state cryptid. The Frogman is among several creatures that purportedly roam Ohio, even though their existence has never been confirmed.

In a news release, the lawmakers said cryptids help fuel tourism and foster a local identity − regardless of whether they're real or not.

"This bill is about showcasing our communities," Rader said in a statement. "The Loveland Frog is uniquely Ohio. It reflects the stories we tell, the places we're proud of and the creativity that makes our state worth celebrating."

The legend of the Loveland Frogman dates back to the 1950s. He's said to live along the Little Miami River and has most often been spotted around Lake Isabella in Loveland, according to the Ohio Department of Development.

Loveland made the Frogman its city mascot and hosts an annual Frogman Festival. It also inspired a musical and a 2023 horror movie.

House Bill 821 was introduced April 13 and awaits a committee assignment.
