OCCC Appropriation increases $2.6 Million for Sports Betting

COLUMBUS — The State Controlling Board has approved an increase in the Ohio Casino Control Commission’s spending authority by $2.6 million, which will help the agency implement and regulate sports wagering in Ohio.

Late last year, state lawmakers approved a plan to legalize and regulate sports wagering. The Ohio Casino Control Commission is tasked with establishing and supervising these regulations. Wagering is expected to begin by the end of 2022.

State Representative Scott Oelslager (R-North Canton) said the appropriation increase is important to ensure the new sports program is implemented properly.

“This is a move in the right direction as we get one step closer to legally betting on sports in Ohio. The Ohio Casino Control Commission’s role is critical as it is a large undertaking to ensure sports wagering is done in a responsible and appropriate way.  ” he said.

The legislation authorizing sports wagering provides for up to 40 brick-and-mortar locations and more than 25 mobile sports betting entities, along with betting kiosks at certain liquor establishments.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission’s regulatory duties for sports wagering include licensure of mobile platform providers, brick-and-mortar facilities, equipment and software providers and other entities. After licensure, the agency will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of sports betting.

The spending authority increase will cover various costs associated with the implementation of sports wagering, including additional personnel, equipment and supplies.

The Casino Control Commission receives no state general revenue funding. Application and licensing fees will cover the appropriation authority increase approved Monday by the State Controlling Board.

The next Ohio Controlling Board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 28.
