A Legislative Update, A Guest Column by Representative Scott Oelslager - Jan. 17, 2020

Scott Oelslager News

The House was successful in passing several pieces of legislation before the end of the year including bills to designate Brain Cancer Awareness Month and to save taxpayer dollars.

My colleagues in the Ohio House and I work hard to improve the lives of the Ohioans we represent, and I appreciate the opportunity to update you on these and other issues before us in the legislature.

Temporary Occupational Licensing for Members of the Military: The House voted unanimously to accept the Conference Committee Report on Senate Bill 7, which creates a straightforward process for members of the military and their spouses to receive licensing reciprocity. This bill eliminates regulatory barriers and will support military families who are transitioning to Ohio for active duty.

Creating the TechCred and Microcredential Assistance Programs: The House also voted to accept the Conference Committee Report on House Bill 2. House Bill 2 develops the TechCred program to support employers who provide current or prospective employees with credentials or certificates that are industry recognized and beneficial to students and businesses in Ohio.

Designating May as Brain Cancer Awareness Month: House Bill 230 designates the month of May as Brain Cancer Awareness Month. Raising awareness about brain cancer will help educate people about the symptoms that could lead to earlier diagnoses and better outcomes. I cosponsored this bill, which passed unanimously.

Allowing the Ohio Water Development Authority to Refinance Loans: House Bill 264, which passed unanimously, authorizes the Ohio Water Development Authority to make loans and grants to entities or government agencies for the refinancing of waste water and water management facilities. This is common sense legislation that will save taxpayer dollars.
