Ohio House Passes Bill to Require Photo Identification when Applying for a Marriage License

COLUMBUS – State Representatives Mike Odioso (R-Green Twp.) and Cindy Abrams (R-Harrison) are pleased to announce that the Ohio House of Representatives today passed legislation to update the marriage license application process in Ohio.  

House Bill 386, championed by Odioso and Abrams, will require applicants to present current and valid photo identification when applying for a marriage license. Under current law, applicants are only required to prove their age, not their identity. 

“The State of Ohio, the probate court, and each future marriage partner all have the commonsense and legal right to ask, ‘Who are you?’” said Odioso. 

“This is a commonsense bill that I am happy to help lead the charge on,” said Abrams. 

Acceptable forms of identification will include a U.S. passport, driver’s license, state-issued identification card, government-issued photo ID, or a school-issued photo ID.

House Bill 386 now moves to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
