Latyna M. Humphrey News

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Latyna M. Humphrey (D-Columbus) is visiting the White House today to participate in a convening of state legislators on childcare. This event provides an opportunity for legislative leaders from across the United States to discuss and collaborate on effective childcare legislation and policies throughout the country.

"I am elated and excited to connect with colleagues to discuss one of the most important issues in America: our children." said Rep. Humphrey.

State Rep. Humphrey, along with State Rep. Andrea White, currently sponsors priority legislation in the Ohio legislature called The Strong Foundations Act (HB7). This Bipartisan legislation aims to take a multifaceted approach to tackle childcare in Ohio. According to Groundwork Ohio’s Early Childhood Dashboard, Ohio ranks lower than other states in various aspects of childbearing, including infant mortality rates, maternal deaths, postpartum depression, and child poverty.

House Bill 7 will accomplish the following:

  • Expand Centering Pregnancy, implementing evidence-based/evidence-informed group pregnancy educational programs to address gaps in care.
  • Expand coverage for healthcare and early intervention.
  • Expand infant vitality support through a community-based grant program targeting gaps.
  • Address early childhood mental health needs through Medicaid expansion.
  • Expand participation and access to the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.
  • Expand Early Head Start through a two-year pilot program.
  • Increase access to safe, stable housing.
  • Expand access to doula services through certification and Medicaid.

Childcare agencies and advocacy groups have widely acknowledged Rep. Humphrey's commitment to childcare throughout Ohio. Her work will be further recognized during the White House convening on childcare today.
