State Representative Kevin Ritter (R-Marietta) announced this week the release of $100,000 through the Ohio Controlling Board to support renovations at the historic Barker House in Newport.

According to documents provided at the meeting, plans for the grant consist of interior and exterior renovations including timber replacement and wall rebuilding/re-pointing at the facility. The project’s expected completion date is December 2026.

“The Barker House has significant, historical meaning for the people of Washington County, and I’m glad to see resources allocated to ensure it continues to be a valued part of the community for future generations,” said Rep. Ritter.

According to the website, the Judge Joseph Barker Jr. House is among the most significant of Washington County's historic buildings. Due to the prominence of its builder and owner, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
