State Rep. Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) today applauded the Biden-Harris Administration for hosting the first-ever White House Maternal Health Day of Action. The administration announced several new commitments to support maternal and child health, including funding in the Build Back Better Act for maternal health, a report on the impact of postpartum Medicaid coverage, and the establishment of a “birthing-friendly” hospital designation.

“We are facing a maternal health crisis, where Black women are three times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related complications,” said Rep. Brent. “We need to address this issue now. This Maternal Health Day of Action is a great place to start. Funding for postpartum insurance coverage and investing in research of maternal health risks are positive steps that will help save lives. Our federal and state governments both need to continue to invest in maternal health to protect mothers and their children.”
