Rep. Brent Announces $67M to Feed Ohio Students Through Expanded School Meal Programs
COLUMBUS — State Rep. Juanita O. Brent (D-Cleveland) today proudly announced that the Ohio Controlling Board has awarded the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce a combined increased appropriation authority in the amount of $67M to support National School Lunch and Breakfast Program payments to districts across the state.
“This $67M boost isn’t just about feeding children; it is about feeding their potential," said Rep. Brent. “Every student deserves to learn with a full stomach and a clear mind. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—when we invest in our children, we invest in our future.”"
The separate Controlling Board items authorized $58M for lunches and $9M for breakfast claims for meals served to participating schools, districts, and providers. The appropriation authority is effective immediately and will be reflected in upcoming district disbursements.
The Controlling Board additionally approved an additional $850K for the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program to support subsidy payments to schools and districts introducing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options.
