COLUMBUS – The Ohio Senate today passed Makenna’s Law, sponsored by State Representatives Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) and Adam Miller (D-Columbus), which seeks to limit swimming pool’s water pressure.

“This bill is extremely important to the safety of Ohio’s families,” Schmidt said. “When our families go out for a fun day at a pool or water park, they should never have to worry about injury from water pressure.”

Schmidt and Miller have been sounding the alarm for limits on pool water pressure after Makenna Day, seven-years-old at the time of the incident, was seriously injured at her local swimming pool while standing over a water feature. Makenna endured the initial injury, but also underwent surgery and multiple follow up appointments to ensure a full recovery. To prevent such an event from happening to other children, Makenna has shared her story throughout the committee process.

“Makenna, a Milford Elementary student, and her mother came to me and asked me to pass this law,” Schmidt said. “I admire her bravery at such a young age. After she went through this horrible accident, she stepped up with the intention of helping others. I am so grateful to see her idea come to fruition.”

The bill now heads to the Governor for further action.
