State Rep. Haraz N. Ghanbari (R-Perrysburg) recently addressed delegates at Buckeye Boys State in Oxford, marking his fifth consecutive time serving as a keynote speaker for the program.

Ghanbari spoke to the young leaders about public service, leadership and the importance of civic engagement. This year’s program carried special significance as delegates gathered during America’s 250th anniversary, offering them a unique opportunity to reflect on the nation’s founding while preparing to help shape its future.

“Buckeye Boys State gives young men a hands-on understanding of how government works and why civic leadership matters,” Ghanbari said. “It was an honor to return for the fifth consecutive year and speak with these students during America’s 250th anniversary. Those selected to attend this year are part of a truly unique class of delegates, learning the responsibilities of citizenship at a historic moment for our nation.”

Ghanbari encouraged delegates to lead with integrity, listen respectfully to others and remain engaged in their communities. He noted that many of Ohio’s strongest leaders begin by serving close to home — in schools, neighborhoods, volunteer organizations and local government.

“As we mark 250 years of American independence, we are reminded that self-government depends on each generation stepping forward to serve,” Ghanbari said. “These delegates represent the next generation of leaders. Whether they pursue public office, military service, business, education, skilled trades or another path, Ohio needs citizens who are willing to serve with purpose and put their communities first.”

During the 136th General Assembly, Ghanbari also introduced House Concurrent Resolution 7, jointly sponsored by State Rep. Joe Miller (D-Amherst), to support and encourage the work of the American Legion Buckeye Boys State and the American Legion Auxiliary Buckeye Girls State. The resolution recognizes the programs for providing premier educational and leadership opportunities to Ohio’s youth and highlights their role in teaching students about citizenship, government and public service. The resolution was signed June 3, 2026, following unanimous passage by both chambers.

“Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State have helped shape generations of civic-minded Ohioans,” Ghanbari said. “House Concurrent Resolution 7 sends a clear message that the Ohio General Assembly values these programs and the work they do to prepare young people for lives of leadership and service.”

In addition to serving in the Ohio House, Ghanbari serves as a commander in the United States Navy Reserve and has 25 years of military service. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion, where he previously served as commander of American Legion Post 28 in Perrysburg, as well as a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is also a member of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and the Military Officers Association of America.

Buckeye Boys State, sponsored by the American Legion Department of Ohio, is an annual program that brings high school students together to learn about government by creating and operating a mock city, county and state government. Delegates participate in elections, legislative sessions, court proceedings and other hands-on activities designed to teach civic responsibility and leadership.
