State Representative Gayle Manning (R-North Ridgeville) recently supported legislation creating a new income tax deduction approved by state lawmakers that will help Ohio teachers. The Governor signed the legislation into law on Wednesday, November 6.

The law will allow educators to deduct up to $250 of unreimbursed classroom-related expenses incurred each year.

“Ohio’s teachers are doing great work preparing the next generation of Ohioans for success,” said Representative Manning.

Under the new law, which takes effect for tax year 2020, qualifying expenses include classroom supplies, such as books, computers and supplementary materials. Professional development courses related to the teacher’s curriculum are also allowed.

The new state income tax deduction would be in addition to a federal income tax deduction that is currently allowed.

“As a retired teacher, I understand teachers spend several hundred dollars out of their own pockets each year for classroom supplies,” said Representative Manning. “This new law is a step forward to do more to support teachers in our classrooms.”
