Rep. Rogers, Jr. Honors Fallen Military Hero Staff Sergeant Jack W. Coy with Veterans Memorial Highway Designation

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Elgin Rogers, Jr. (D-Toledo) today announced the passage of Substitute Senate Bill (SB) 52, legislation that includes the designation of a portion of Interstate Route 280 in Lucas County as the "SSG Jack W. Coy Veterans Memorial Highway," ensuring that the sacrifice and service of an Oregon World War II hero will be permanently recognized by the State of Ohio.
The designation honors Staff Sergeant Jack W. Coy, a Toledo native who gave his life in service to his country during World War II. Originally introduced as standalone legislation, the designation was ultimately incorporated into Sub. SB 52, a broader measure recognizing veterans, law enforcement officers, and public servants through memorial highway designations across Ohio.
"Today, Ohio ensures that the legacy of Staff Sergeant Jack W. Coy and the sacrifices of our veterans will never be forgotten. As Ohioans travel this highway, they will be reminded of a young man from Toledo and all of those who have served," said Rep. Rogers.
Rep. Rogers emphasizes that memorial designations such as this ensure that the stories of our fallen heroes remain part of our communities and our collective memory. It is a further testament to our promise that we will never leave our soldiers behind, honoring their service and preserving their legacy for future generations.
"I am grateful to Mrs. Shawnelle Johns and the entire Coy family for helping bring this remarkable American story to light and ensuring that future generations understand the sacrifices made by heroes like Staff Sergeant Jack W. Coy," concluded Rep. Rogers.
