COLUMBUS – State Rep. Dontavius L. Jarrells (D-Columbus) and Majority Whip Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.) today held a press conference introducing bipartisan legislation to reimburse state employees for out-of-pocket costs associated with GLP-1 drugs—medications commonly prescribed for chronic weight management and other metabolic conditions.

“This legislation ensures that state employees access FDA-approved, life-saving medications without being burdened by extreme out-of-pocket costs,” said Rep. Jarrells. “We’re creating a pathway to better health outcomes while acknowledging the importance of preventative care in fighting chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes.”

The proposed bill would amend the Ohio Revised Code to require the Department of Administrative Services to offer reimbursement for GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, that are purchased either directly from manufacturers or through authorized programs. Reimbursements would cover up to $500 per month in the first year of treatment, and up to $250 per month in the second year.

To qualify, applicants must provide proof of a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, a physician’s diagnosis, and documentation of payment. The reimbursement period would be capped at 24 consecutive months, with the possibility of reapplying after a waiting period and demonstrated need.

This measure aims to make evidence-based treatments more accessible for public servants, reduce long-term healthcare costs, and promote a healthier state workforce. The legislation includes accountability measures and sunset clauses to ensure the program is cost-effective and responsibly administered.

The bill was introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives and is currently awaiting committee assignment.
