COLUMBUS — State Rep. Dontavius L. Jarrells (D-Columbus) today applauds Cleveland’s candidacy to host the 2030 Special Olympics USA Games and urges Ohioans to stand united behind this inclusive, economically impactful opportunity.

“Bringing the 2030 Special Olympics to Ohio would be a monumental event—not just for Cleveland, but for every corner of our state,” said Rep. Jarrells, ranking member on House Arts, Athletics, and Tourism Committee. “This event will uplift communities, showcase Ohio’s commitment to inclusion, and deliver lasting economic and social benefits.”

Cleveland emerged as one of two finalists, alongside Nashville, to host the eight-day games, which will welcome more than 5.5K athletes and coaches from all 50 states, plus over 100K family members and spectators. The city’s bid includes major venues such as Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, downtown hotels, and the convention center.

Economic Impact and Community Involvement

As a champion for equity and accessibility, Rep. Jarrells emphasized the societal importance of the games.

“Hosting the Special Olympics resonates deeply with our values—every athlete deserves respect, opportunity, and cheer. This is about inclusion, unity, and giving people with intellectual disabilities the stage they deserve,” said Rep. Jarrells.

Rep. Jarrells encourages Ohioans to continue showing support through volunteer commitments, attendance pledges, and community enthusiasm.

As a steadfast advocate for individuals with disabilities, he remains committed to raising awareness, expanding access, and ensuring that all Ohioans—regardless of ability—are seen, heard, and empowered to thrive.
