Rep. Jarrells Honors Somali Independence Day with Lighting Ceremony and Flag Raising

State Representative Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus) has partnered with constituents of the Somali-American community and the City of Columbus to conduct a lighting ceremony at Columbus City Hall and to host a flag raising ceremony on Statehouse grounds.

“Every Ohioan should have a place to call home and with Columbus holding a large population of Somali-Americans, it is important that we celebrate and acknowledge the service of Somali-Americans by creating spaces to promote Somali culture and tradition,” Rep. Jarrells said. 

A Columbus Lighting Ceremony will be held tonight at City Hall at 7:30 p.m., lighting the city blue. Blue represents the Somali flag. In addition, tomorrow, July 1, 2021, a Flag Raising Ceremony will happen on Statehouse grounds at noon. This event will be open to the public.
