Rep. Jarrells Announces Support for the Ohio EPA's Decision to Revoke Proposal for Data Center Discharge Permit

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Dontavius L. Jarrells (D-Columbus) today celebrates a huge win for the safety and protection of Ohioans. As data centers remain at the forefront of conversations about economic and job growth, ensuring public safety remains a growing priority. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) announced that they will not move forward with their initial proposal to allow data center wastewater in lakes, rivers, and other waterways.

Originally, the proposal included a faster review of wastewater for over 200 data centers statewide, omitting the thorough review necessary to maintain public health standards. This crucial change comes from an excessive number of public comments aimed at upholding water cleanliness and keeping waste out of our beloved Ohio bodies of water.

“Economic growth should never come at the expense of the water our families drink, the rivers our children play in, or the health of the communities we call home. I’m grateful Ohioans spoke up and the Ohio EPA listened. We can welcome innovation and new investment while still demanding strong protections for our people and our environment. Clean water is not negotiable,” said Rep. Jarrells.

The Ohio EPA will now use individual National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits instead of the generic ones initially proposed. These individual NPDES permits ensure comprehensive review and strict standards in accordance with state and federal law. Rep.
