Democrats issue statement on police-involved shooting on Westside

COLUMBUS- State Reps. Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus), Adam Miller (D-Columbus) and Latyna Humphrey (D-Columbus) issued a statement after 20-year-old Donovan Lewis was fatally shot early Tuesday by a Columbus police officer attempting to serve an arrest warrant. Body camera footage showed the man was unarmed and in bed.

“Our thoughts are with the entire Columbus community as more details come to light about the death of Mr. Lewis. It is imperative that the city prioritizes transparency and accountability during their investigation in order to prevent future tragedies. Following a full investigation, the Columbus Police Department must commit to changing its policies as necessary to ensure all residents feel safe in their homes and community. As elected officials, we will continue to work for more state dollars to support solutions that protect Ohioans, such as community policing, DARE programs and community engagement.”
