State Representative Romanchuk Honors Lexington Cross Country During House Session

State Representative Mark Romanchuk (R-Mansfield) presented three resolutions on behalf of the Ohio House to the Lexington cross country boys team, girls team, and to their coach, Denise Benson.

Lexington High School swept the boys and girls cross country Division II titles for 2017. Lexington also swept the titles in 2015, making Coach Benson the first in Ohio’s history to earn both the boys and girls titles during two different years.

The Lexington girls team ended the 2017 season with a record of 195:8. Their winning record of 96 percent included an Ohio Cardinal Conference Championship, District Championship, Regional Championship, culminating in the Division II State Championship. The Lexington boys team finished the 2017 season with a record of 228:15. This 94 percent win record included an Ohio Cardinal Conference Championship, Regional Championship, culminating in the Division II State Championship.

Coach Benson was also honored on the house floor for being named a 2017 National Inspiring Coach of the Year by the Brooks Running Company. In addition to her historic championships, Benson has coached with Lexington for 19 years, and has earned 11 conference, 11 district, five regional, and four State-runner up titles for her girls teams. Her boys teams have earned seven conference, eight district, four regional, and one state runner-up title.

“I am extremely proud of these teams, Coach Benson, and the high school which has consistently produced top notch programs and student-athletes,” stated Rep. Romanchuk.  “I look forward to having Lexington back for future championships.”
