COLUMBUS—State Representative Kevin Miller (R-Newark) Monday introduced legislation to address dangerous dog attacks in Ohio.
Key provisions of the bill are as follows:
- Clarifies current language in the Ohio Revised Code designating vicious, dangerous and nuisance dogs;
- Includes protections for dogs that are defending themselves, their owners, or their property;
- Mandates the euthanasia of a dog if it has killed or seriously injured a person after due process; and
- Gives the local dog warden the authority to seize a dog immediately following such an attack.
“This critical legislation will increase public safety throughout Ohio communities,” said Miller. “We must hold owners of dangerous and vicious dogs accountable when they fail to control their dogs, while also protecting dogs who are defending themselves or their households.”
