Representative Kevin Miller Highlights Flood Relief Assistance for Residents

COLUMBUS – State Representative Kevin Miller (R-Newark) is highlighting the resources available to residents displaced by the extreme storms and flooding affecting communities across Perry and Licking Counties. Residents are encouraged to document damage, report losses to local emergency management officials and contact their insurance providers as they begin making repairs.

“During times like this, it is important that we come together and make sure our neighbors know where they can turn for help,” said Representative Miller. “I am grateful to the Red Cross, food banks, churches, volunteers and other organizations that have stepped up to support families affected by these storms. These resources are providing critical assistance to people who have been displaced, and I encourage residents to take advantage of the help available to them.”

Perry County

The American Red Cross continues to operate a shelter at the Perry County Fairgrounds in New Lexington, where approximately 40 to 50 people are being housed each night.

EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE:

The Southeast Ohio Foodbank has provided emergency food assistance to Perry County residents affected by the flooding through two emergency mobile markets.

5,148 pounds of food distributed
Supported by a $25,000 grant from the AEP Ohio Foundation
12 AEP Ohio volunteers assisted with the community's flood response

Families received shelf-stable food including canned chicken, canned vegetables, pork and beans, peanut butter, jelly, shelf-stable milk, cereal, pancake and waffle mix and more.

DOCUMENTING FLOOD DAMAGE:

Residents affected by the flooding should take steps to document their losses and protect themselves from additional damage.

Residents are encouraged to:

• Photograph and video all damage before making repairs whenever it is safe to do so.
• Create a detailed list of losses, including damaged property, structures, vehicles, equipment and personal belongings.
• Save all receipts for cleanup, temporary repairs, lodging, supplies and other disaster-related expenses.
• Report damage to local emergency management officials so it can be included in the overall damage assessment.
• Contact your insurance company and begin the claims process, if applicable.
• Do not delay necessary safety repairs. Repairs needed to protect residents or prevent additional damage should be made as soon as possible. Document the damage before and during repairs whenever possible.
