State Representative Marlene Anielski (R-Walton Hills) is encouraging those interested to participate in events for Survivors of Suicide Awareness Day, which is recognized internationally as the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  Events are scheduled throughout the state and the nation on Saturday, November 29, 2016.

Survivor Day is the one day a year when people affected by suicide loss gather around the world at events in their local communities to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope.  Events are being held across the state on Saturday and an online webinar event is also available.  Please visit afsp.org/SurvivorDay to search locations for the events or to view the live virtual Survivor Day event online.

All gatherings will include a screening of Life Journeys: Reclaiming Life after Loss, a new American Foundation for Suicide Prevention produced documentary that follows the grief and the journey of healing that follows a suicide loss over time.

House Bill 440, sponsored by Rep. Anielski, would designate the Saturday before Thanksgiving as Ohio Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.  The bill is scheduled for a second hearing and possible vote on Tuesday, November 29th in the Senate State Government Committee.

“The designation of a Survivor Day is a step to acknowledge and to assist those families, friends, and loved ones who have been affected by suicide in their lives,” Rep. Anielski said.  “The silent epidemic that is plaguing our nation knows no age, geographical area, or socioeconomic limit. These healing events provide survivors with tools, resources and a support network to help manage grief and healing journeys."
