COLUMBUS, OH — State Rep. Latyna M. Humphrey  (D-Columbus) issued the following statement regarding the tragic deaths of a woman and her 11-year-old daughter in East Columbus:

“I am heartbroken by the devastating loss of life that occurred in our community this week. A mother and her child should be safe in their own home. Instead, another family has been torn apart by what appears to be an act of domestic violence. My prayers are with their loved ones, friends, classmates, neighbors, and everyone impacted by this unimaginable tragedy.

Domestic violence is not a private matter. It is a public safety issue, a public health issue, and far too often, a matter of life and death. Behind every statistic is a person who deserved the opportunity to live, grow, and thrive. While this case remains under investigation, we must continue having difficult but necessary conversations about how we identify warning signs, support survivors, and ensure that those experiencing abuse know where to turn for help before violence escalates. As a legislator and as a mother, I cannot stop thinking about the life of the young girl lost in this tragedy. She had dreams, hopes, and a future ahead of her. We owe it to her memory, and to every victim of domestic violence, to remain committed to prevention, intervention, and accountability. We cannot wait until another candlelight vigil to talk about domestic violence. We cannot wait until another child is lost. The time to intervene is before the headlines. Our community is grieving today. Let us honor these victims not only with our condolences, but with a renewed commitment to protecting families, strengthening support systems for survivors, and ensuring that no one suffers in silence.”
