COLUMBUS — State Reps. Christine Cockley (D-Columbus) today released the following statement on House Bill (HB) 188, legislation that would create the Ohio Israel Trade and Innovation Partnership:

“As a Jewish woman, I remain committed to advocating for the safety and security of all Jewish people everywhere. Simultaneously, I cannot support all actions taken by the Israeli government during this time. As with any government, I believe it's crucial to be vocal about human rights violations, no matter where they occur.

Over the last few days, I have heard from many of you expressing concern about House Bill 188, which would establish a trade partnership between Israel and Ohio. After carefully considering your feedback, I have made the decision to vote NO on this bill. I am here to represent you, and it is clear that for many of you, this bill is not a priority, especially given the current challenges we are facing here in Ohio.

When our schools are being defunded, the cost of living continues to rise, and critical programs like Medicaid and SNAP are at risk for millions of Ohioans, my district has made it clear that we should be focusing on addressing these issues at home rather than prioritizing foreign political interests. At a time when so many of us are struggling to make ends meet, it is more important than ever that we keep Ohio’s resources and taxpayer dollars focused on the needs of our own communities.

To every District 6 resident who has called, emailed, or sent my office mail about this bill, thank you. Your voices matter, and as your state representative, I am here to ensure that your concerns are heard and represent you at the Statehouse. I will continue to stand up for all Ohioans, regardless of their faith or background.

Thank you for trusting me to represent you.”

HB 188 now heads to the Senate for consideration.
