Although we have experienced unseasonably warm weather thus far this season, Ohioans know the snow and ice is inevitably around the corner. As the temperatures begin to drop and the snow starts to fall, it often creates a scenic view throughout our snow-covered neighborhoods. We must bear in mind, however, that the beauty of a snowfall means we must exercise more vigilance while driving.

According to the National Safety Council, traffic fatalities were up 14 percent nationwide in 2015 and 16 percent here in Ohio. While the emergence of smartphones and other technology has certainly benefitted our daily lives, it has also posed a danger to our roadways as many drivers are now increasingly more distracted. This distraction, coupled with the ice and snow this winter can certainly prove to be a dangerous combination.

This winter, I encourage you to remain cognizant of changing road conditions and always take the necessary precautions to ensure safety. Some important tips to keep in mind is to make sure your tires are properly inflated, leave extra space between vehicles in front of you and be aware that it takes a longer amount of time to stop in icy conditions. When winter weather hits, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) works around the clock to clear our roadways, however it’s always a good idea to check www.ohgo.com, ODOT’s traffic website, for all updates and alerts on road conditions.

Thousands of Ohioans traveled this holiday season to visit family and friends, and it’s my sincere hope that everyone experienced safe travels to their holiday festivities. I wish everyone throughout the 40th Ohio House District a joyous and safe new year!
