COLUMBUS—The Senate Local Government Committee today began hearings on House Bill 61, which will designate “James A. Garfield Day” in honor of the 20th President of the United States, announced State Representative Jamie Callender (R-Concord). This begins the 2nd phase of the legislative process following unanimous passage out of both the House State and Local Government Committee (12-0) and on the House floor (89-0).

The bill will officially make November 19th, President Garfield’s Birthday, “James A. Garfield Day.”

“Thank you to my colleges in the House for their unanimous support of HB61 and to Senator O’Brien for beginning hearings on HB61,” said Callender. “While short, President Garfield’s time in the White House has served as a catalyst for reforms continuing to impact the lives of Americans to this day. It is fitting that Ohio commemorate his lifetime of service to both his fellow Americans and Ohioans.”

Mentor, Ohio is home to President Garfield’s house. Inside the President’s home is his Presidential Library, which was the first of its kind and includes writings from the President about his life and career as a minster, attorney, army officer, and political leader.

House Bill 61 will continue to receive hearings in the Senate Local Government Committee.
