COLUMBUS — Ohio House Minority Leader Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati) today delivered testimony in front of the Ohio Redistricting Commission on House Bill (HB) 442, House Democrats’ proposed fair, constitutional congressional map.

“The ongoing federal government shutdown makes clear how critical responsive, accountable congressional representation is for affordable healthcare, for food for children, and for stability needed for safety and economic growth. We have been tasked by our constituents with trying to find bipartisan agreement and adopt the people’s map. And Ohioans desperately need us to get this right, because every day we are reminded of the consequences of having unrepresentative districts. The General Assembly failed to do that in September and this commission has 10 days to try and meet our constitutional charge,” said Leader Isaacsohn in his testimony. “We hope this commission is able to work together and set aside partisan differences to develop a map that meets our constitutional requirements, represents Ohioans as best as possible, and that everyone can support.”

HB 442 is a fair and constitutional proposal that complies with the amendment Ohioans overwhelmingly voted for in 2018 to establish the process for creating districts. This proposal was developed with the data from the last 10 years of elections, which show Ohio is about 55% Republican and 45% Democratic.

The Ohio Redistricting Commission ended today’s meeting without public testimony from citizens or establishing a second hearing. It now has until October 31 to vote on a bipartisan map that requires four of seven votes, including both Democrats. If a map fails to secure the necessary votes, it goes back to the legislature where eventually it can pass a map along party lines by November 30 by a simple majority, ensuring a 13-2 map.
