Rep. Clyde Applauds Legal Challenge to Attacks on Women's Health

Lawsuit Challenges Unlawful Provisions in State Budget

State Rep. Kathleen Clyde (D-Kent) issued the following statement on the Preterm Cleveland, Inc. v. Kasichlawsuit, which challenges three of the attacks on women’s health care in Governor Kasich’s budget.

“I applaud the filing of this lawsuit to protect Ohio women from the attacks made on their health care by Governor Kasich’s budget.  These attacks that Governor Kasich signed into law – the targeting of women’s clinics for closure, forced ultrasounds and creating programs that provide medically inaccurate information to women – are wrong and incredibly harmful to women’s health.  Governor Kasich and Ohio Republicans need to get out of the doctor’s office and stop inserting themselves into decisions that should be between a woman, her family and her doctor.

It was also wrong to try to slip these attacks on women’s health into the state budget, thinking no one would notice, and when they have nothing to do with appropriating funds.  This type of underhanded political maneuvering is just what the single subject rule in our Ohio Constitution was adopted to prevent.  I feel confident that these attacks on women’s health care will be struck down by the courts, and I am grateful to these advocates for filing this important lawsuit."
